As cities across Europe and the Baltic Sea Region face increasing climate risks, the need for robust and nature-inclusive urban strategies has never been more urgent. This year's meeting aims to catalyse action by providing a unique platform for municipal leaders, experts, planners, and practitioners to collaborate on building cities that are not only resilient to climate change but also rich in biodiversity and nature.

Together with Copenhagen Malmö Port (CMP), World Maritime University (WMU), and Union of the Baltic Cities (UBC) - the City of Malmö is hosting a pivotal conference on Future-proofing Our Port Cities, taking place 30 September – 1 October 2025. The conference brings together decision-makers, representatives from business, academia and the public sector from across Europe to jointly discuss future strategies for Europe's coastal and port cities in light of climate change.

As cities face growing challenges from climate change, this edition of the UBC TALKS webinar will explore how to develop practical, scalable solutions to strengthen climate resilience and disaster preparedness. The discussion will feature expert insights, concrete examples and actionable strategies to support local governments in turning risks into opportunities for climate-proof and resilient urban development.

The fourth Smart Cities in Smart Regions Conference will take place on 9-10 October 2024 at the campus of LAB University of Applied Sciences in the beautiful city of Lahti, Finland.

Sustainable transformation for resilient coastal city The event will focus on Gdańsk harbour and riverside areas as case studies, allowing creative flow and exchange of experiences among representatives of different UBC cities. The development strategy of Gdańsk encourages seeking new solutions and implementing adaptive measures to make public spaces more green, inclusive and accessible. At the joint seminar, we will get to plan such spaces together – as a group of sustainability experts, city planners, and architects.

Hybrid workshop about innovative nature-based solutions for innovative cities organised in Gdansk, organised as an EU Green Week partner event.

The UBC TALKS webinar on 27 February at 10.30-12.00 EET / 9.30-11.00 CET will bring inspiration and knowledge needed to start transnational cooperation and to secure funding for actions leading to innovative and climate-smart cities!

As the first of the four Macro-Regional Strategies in Europe, the Baltic Sea Region Strategy has always been a front-runner, be it innovation ecosystems, sustainability-oriented citizens, or energy security goals. Countries from the Baltic Sea Region are working together to develop renewable energy sources and to improve energy efficiency. In addition, much effort is being put into the promotion of regional trade and investment, and improving interconnections between the countries in the region and beyond.
