Organised in early October 2024, the project meeting of Climate-4-CAST created a great exchange opportunity for different climate budgeting practices from cities in the Baltic Sea Region.

The heat pump solution developed and implemented in Turku Student Village PED area was awarded by the European Heat Pump Association (EHPA) in Brussels on 25 September 2024. Tyyssija’s heat pump solution won 1st place in the category “Heat Pump City of the Year”, which recognizes heat pump projects implemented at the local level with the support of the city. The solution was co-developed in the project RESPONSE by partners VTT, Oilon, Högfors GST, and Turku Energy.

This seminar was titled “Sustainable transformation for resilient coastal city”, focusing on three areas of the hosting city of Gdańsk: two parts of the harbour zone and the area next to the football arena built for UEFA Euro 2012. The aim of the seminar was to provide new functional visions for these areas, prepared by the teams of international experts from UBC member cities in line with the hosting city’s strategic objectives.

We are excited to announce that the 2024 CDP-ICLEI Track reporting platform is now open! UBC member cities are warmly invited to share their climate and environmental data as part of this year’s disclosure cycle. The platform is now open! Cities that disclose their data by September 18 will have it assessed and scored by CDP. Albeit no score will be issued for the data disclosed after this date, the questionnaire will still be open until the beginning of December.

Our Sustainable Cities Commission co-created the spring 2024 edition of the Baltic Cities Bulletin under the topic "Towards green and just transition"!

A consulting company based in Germany - aconium GmbH is developing a project idea focusing on energy transition and the involvement of schools. They look for municipalities interested in joining the project.

The city of Turku aims to be climate neutral in 2029 and as part of the transition is testing new solutions in the Student Village. The measures are implemented through RESPONSE project.

The XVII UBC General Conference took place on 24-26 October 2023 in the beautiful coastal city of Palanga in Lithuania. Our Commission organised a workshop on the EU Cities Mission, in addition to the networking event within the programme.

Mid-September is the perfect time to visit Turku, an ambitiously smart and sustainable city in Finland, working towards reaching carbon neutrality already in 2029. Turku is built around the river Aura – but what’s more important (at least where the international cooperation is concerned), it also stands on the shores of the Baltic Sea. Like in many other cities, for a long time Turku citizens have had a limited access to the sea due to different industries and port activities.

The Urban Transition Mission, launched at COP26, opens a call for cities to accelerate clean energy urban solutions! The Mission aims to mobilise decision makers across all levels of government to prioritise climate-neutral and net-zero solutions enabled by clean energy and systemic innovation across all sectors and in urban governance.

UBC members Turku, Lahti, and Malmö are taking three times as many mitigation and adaptation measures as other cities to become climate neutral before 2050 and have received the highest award from CDP for their efforts.

EUCF wants to bridge the gap between cities, local authorities, and sustainable energy investments by providing targeted funding for turning overarching plans and strategies into investment concepts. In the first three calls six UBC cities have received the grant.
