The newest issue of the Sustainable Cities Bulletin has been published: featuring articles about UBC-CDP cooperation and where to find more information about it, international cooperation projects that our Commission is involved with and a call to join the Clean Beach initiative. A separate story has been written about the recent webinars that UBC Sustainable Cities Commission has been hosting, one on sustainable urban mobility and the other on sustainable urban planning.
A call to organise Clean Beach events in your cities!

Cities of Tallinn, St. Petersburg, Helsinki and Turku have co-organised joint beach cleaning events in their cities for several years in late spring. The events are part of their Baltic Sea Challenge co-operation and the Clean Beach campaign.

Webinars as a tool for enhancing exchange of know-how between our cities

On 11 April 2018, UBC Urban Planning webinar was arranged as a possibility for our cities to learn more about what we do as an organization as well as what kind of projects and activities we have to offer to the Baltic Sea Region. The webinar gathered 14-16 attendees from Sweden, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia and Finland, mostly from the urban planning field.

Definition for brownfields areas & national recommendations published!

Baltic Urban Lab project, led by the UBC Sustainable Cities Commission, has published a definition for urban brownfields. There are no commonly agreed European definitions on what a brownfield is. The definition published by the project emphasizes the importance of integrated and partnership based approach for the redevelopment of brownfield areas.
Smart wastewater treatment in the Baltic Sea Region

The IWAMA project aims at improving the wastewater management in the Baltic Sea Region taking into account principles of resource efficiency. In the project framework, the primary focus is given to development of capacity of the wastewater treatment operators and implementation of pilot investments increasing energy efficiency and advancing sludge handling methods.
Enhancing SUMPs through knowledge exchange in the Baltic Sea Region

Almost 50 mobility practitioners from 8 countries around the Baltic Sea took part in the SUMPs-Up workshop in Tampere on March 15th, that was organized by UBC Sustainable Cities Commission, together with the City of Tampere and MAL-network.
Smart and sustainable Skanssi Area

The Skanssi project was started to create a smart and sustainable residential area in Turku, in the South-Western Finland as part of Turku’s aim to become carbon neutral by 2040. The principles that guide the planning and construction of the whole Skanssi area are: smart, sustainable and innovative.
