The International Photo Competition on Active Mobility brought attention to the importance of sustainable mobility modes across six project partner cities.

This seminar was titled “Sustainable transformation for resilient coastal city”, focusing on three areas of the hosting city of Gdańsk: two parts of the harbour zone and the area next to the football arena built for UEFA Euro 2012. The aim of the seminar was to provide new functional visions for these areas, prepared by the teams of international experts from UBC member cities in line with the hosting city’s strategic objectives.

In the Baltic Sea region, many cities have the goal of becoming carbon neutral. This requires a harmonized approach to strategic urban planning: climate, energy, urban development and mobility plans need to be in line, striving towards the same vision to reach goals. Traditional transport planning needs to be replaced by sustainable urban mobility planning aiming at accessibility and integrated development of all modes.

We are excited to announce that the 2024 CDP-ICLEI Track reporting platform is now open! UBC member cities are warmly invited to share their climate and environmental data as part of this year’s disclosure cycle. The platform is now open! Cities that disclose their data by September 18 will have it assessed and scored by CDP. Albeit no score will be issued for the data disclosed after this date, the questionnaire will still be open until the beginning of December.

On 27 February 2024, our Secretariat had a pleasure of arranging a special edition of the UBC TAKLS webinar series – together with the Interreg Baltic Sea Region Programme! This webinar focused on funding for innovative and climate-smart cities, presenting the open call for funding and the thematic priorities of the Programme 2021-2027, which has put cities into the core of its activities.

The project consortium has convened in the City of Turku – the host city of the UBC Sustainable Cities Commission and the lead partner of the project. The kick-off meeting, held on 9-10 January, has brought together the experts and practitioners in urban mobility planning from the consortium, fostering discussions on shared challenges and collective solutions.

Two new projects have begun in our Secretariat, where we look into achieving climate-neutrality: green mobility and climate budgeting process in the municipalities.

Mid-September is the perfect time to visit Turku, an ambitiously smart and sustainable city in Finland, working towards reaching carbon neutrality already in 2029. Turku is built around the river Aura – but what’s more important (at least where the international cooperation is concerned), it also stands on the shores of the Baltic Sea. Like in many other cities, for a long time Turku citizens have had a limited access to the sea due to different industries and port activities.
