The University and Hanseatic City of Greifswald received the national award for climate-friendly urban development. This award recognises the city's outstanding progress in the area of resilient urban development.

The national award was given to the City of Greifswald recognising the city's outstanding progress in the area of resilient urban development, particularly in Schönwalde I and II districts. Within the framework of the urban development funding programs Greifswald has focused specifically on the sustainable improvement of infrastructure and the creation of climate-friendly living spaces.

Particular attention was paid to the project for the energy-efficient new buildings of the Erwin Fischer Integrated Comprehensive School in Schönwalde I, which also includes Sports Hall II with photovoltaic systems. These buildings not only support school operations but also the usage by clubs and kindergartens, thus consistently implementing the principle of multiple use. Furthermore, numerous streets were renovated and converted to be barrier-free, and important traffic intersections were redesigned to improve pedestrian connections. Technical infrastructure, such as connection to the district heating network and the introduction of tenant electricity, was also adapted to meet climate protection requirements.

The City of Greifswald, together with local housing companies and the municipal utilities, offers consulting services for optimizing energy consumption in order to actively involve residents in the climate protection process.
