2015 has been a busy year in terms of project development and applications. Several calls opened and UBC SCC was involved in a wide range of project proposals. Autumn time was exciting, waiting for the results of our work.
We are happy to announce that three new projects were granted funding and are starting now or in the beginning of next year!
In the end of August, the Central Baltic Programme decided to grant funding for two projects:
Baltic Urban Lab - Integrated Planning and Partnership model for Brownfield regeneration started officially on October 1st and will continue until 1st of January 2019. The project aims at improving urban planning by developing and testing new integrated models for brownfield regeneration. Baltic Urban Lab will identify and promote already existing good practices on brownfield regeneration and facilitates exchange of experiences between planners and experts in the Central Baltic region. New planning tools and models promoting integrated management and co-creative urban planning will be developed and tested on selected brownfield sites in the four project cities ( Riga, Tallinn, Turku and Norrköping).
Baltic Urban Lab is led by the UBC Sustainable Cities Commission.
iWater – Integrated Storm Water management started on December 1st 2015 and will continue until June 1st 2018. iWater aims to improve urban planning by developing integrated and multifunctional storm water management in Central Baltic cities thus creating higher quality, cleaner and safer urban environment and increasing urban sustainability. The project will provide a platform for science-practice collaboration targeted at finding and developing common management methods and solutions for Integrated Storm Water Management (ISWM). The student competition organised by the Aalto University will result in innovative, applicable to BSR conditions stormwater management solutions for seven Central Baltic cities: Riga and Jelgava (LV), Söderhamn and Gävle (SE), Helsinki and Turku (FI) and Tartu (EE).
The project is lead by the City of Riga and UBC Sustainable Cities Commission is responsible for capacity building and piloting multifunctional storm water solutions, as well as overall project communication activities.
In mid-November we were eagerly awaiting the funding decisions form the Baltic Sea Region Programme and despite being surprised about certain decisions, we are happy that our project IWAMA is among the 35 successful applications!
Interactive Water MAnagement -IWAMA will start on March 1st 2016 and continues until 2018. The flagship project aims to improve the resource efficiency in wastewater management in the Baltic Sea Region by capacity development of wastewater treatment (WWT) operators and implementation of pilot investments which will result in reduced nutrient inflows to the Baltic Sea. Actions will focus on three main areas in the municipal WWT sector: capacity development (CD), sludge management (SM) and energy management (EM).
IWAMA is led by UBC SCC and has 17 partners from Estonia, Finland, Germany, Sweden, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland.
