Small is beautiful – European Commission rewards small-sized cities

The European Green Leaf is a new European Commission prize that rewards small-sized cities for their commitment to sustainable urban planning. Winners of the European Green Leaf receive official recognition and are promoted across Europe as forerunners and role models for other cities.

The first European Green Leaf cities are Torres Vedras (Portugal) and Mollet del Vallès (Spain).

Applications for the European Green Leaf open in May and are open to cities of between 20.000 and 100.000 inhabitants with a strong record on sustainability.

The application demands a description of the city’s accomplishments and future plans in six areas: climate change and energy performance; mobility; biodiversity and land use; quality of air and the acoustic environment; waste and green economy and water management.
