The Interactive Water Management (IWAMA) project coordinated by UBC Sustainable Cities Commission was kicked off in June in the Latvian city of Daugavpils over a two-day event. The event was hosted by Daugavpils Water Ltd and took place in the panoramic premises of Park Hotel Latgola in Latvia’s second biggest city on 14 - 15 June 2016.
IWAMA is a flagship project of the European Union Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region. The project develops smart energy and sludge management concepts that will be tested to improve the efficiency of wastewater treatment plants (WWT). The project’s approach to improving resource efficiency in waste water management in the BSR concentrates on capacity development of the WWT operators and implementation of the pilot investments which will result in reduced nutrient inflows to the Baltic Sea.
The project consortium consists of 17 partners and 12 associate partners that includes universities and wastewater treatment plants and water associations. The vast majority of partners were present in Daugavpils to hear work package leaders UBC Sustainable Cities Commission, Technical University of Berlin, University of Tartu and Lahti University of Applied Sciences present project activities. During the second day the wastewater treatment plants from Gdansk, Daugavpils, Jurmala, Kaunas, Tartu and Türi in turn presented their planned investments. During the kick-off, the participants also got to visit the local wastewater treatment plant (pictured).
