UBC is an organization that has always supported the values of democracy, peace, freedom, respect for the law, equality, cooperation and friendship between neighbours. We have cooperated with cities and municipalities for over 30 years overcoming various barriers with the aim of enabling the cooperation built on trust and mutual values of the importance of the sustainable, smart and safe development of cities in the Baltic Sea Region.

Today, the importance of cooperation and solidarity is dramatically prominent, as the unprovoked war against Ukraine has been launched by the Russian state.

In our Commission, the cooperation has always been based on people: bold and smart forerunning visions of city leaders; strong expertise of academia, public and private sector companies; involvement of citizens in democratic local decision-making processes. Our trust now, in the grim circumstances that have gripped Europe on 24 February 2022, stays with people suffering from this aggression and standing up against it.

Our thoughts are with the citizens of Ukraine, where the invasion is claiming the lives of thousands and is tragically affecting the lives of millions.

UBC calls for an immediate end to the military aggression against Ukraine.
