The IWAMA project focuses on smart energy and sludge management, and raising the capacity of wastewater treatment operators. In its framework, the project features several workshops addressing the topics of resource efficiency on the plants. The first workshop was already organized in Lahti last year.

This time, the 2nd International Capacity Development Workshop was held in Boltenhagen, Germany on 14–15 February 2017. The event took place in the picturesque resort on the Baltic Sea shore, and it featured two days of intensive knowledge sharing and networking among project partners.

During the first day, experts from the universities of Germany and Austria introduced their presentations on energy trends in the wastewater treatment sphere. Different aspects were brought up: digestion process, addressing the surplus sludge, operating conditions. Later, selected case studies from WWTPs in the region presented their excellence in energy management.

The Baltic Sea Challenge presented updates on the commitments from the IWAMA partners. Since the previous workshop, where the network introduced guidelines on how to make a commitment, great results have already been achieved: partners invite new stakeholders to the Challenge initiative and launch their own planned projects.

The organizers of the workshop planned a site visit to the local plant in Grevesmuhlen situated 20km from where the event was taking place. Visiting plants is a great way of sharing practical knowledge, and an opportunity to find implemented solutions that can be replicated in other places.
