Signed target agreement – Greifswald aims to be a model city for sustainable education

Greifswald has the target to be one of the forerunner cities in Germany for sustainable education.

Sustainable development is a declared goal in the university and Hanseatic city of Greifswald. Under Citizen Participation, the city is working on a comprehensive Sustainability strategy. Numerous actors from politics, administration and business and free initiatives are involved in the areas of climate and environmental protection, democracy, anti-racism, social participation and fair trade. In order to take as many people as possible along on this path, the subject of "Education for Sustainable Development" (ESD) is now to be brought into focus. The city is supported in this by the ESD competence center, which Greifswald has selected as one of 50 model municipalities nationwide for ESD.

New bike station at the main train station

Bicycle traffic share is about 40% in Greifswald, which is one or even the highest in Germany. After several years of planning, a lead project for Greifswald bicycle traffic was implemented in February 2021. In the presence of the Minister for Energy, Infrastructure and Digitalisation, Christian Pegel, the bike station at the train station was put into operation.

The new parking system can host nearly 150 bicycles near the central station. The bike station includes a double-decker bicycle racks for a total of 104 bicycles. In addition, additional space is provided for recumbent bikes, tandems, cargo bikes or bike trailers. A third module accommodates 20 individually lockable double-decker bicycle boxes for a total of 40 bicycles. The link between bicycle, train and bus will be improved with the new system, making public bus and rail transport more attractive.
