As part of the EU project BATS (Baltic Sea region Active mobiliTy Solutions - in darkness and all weather conditions), which promotes year-round active mobility, the City of Gdynia is organizing the autumn-winter edition of the campaign for kindergarten and primary school children called “Odprowadzam Sam”.

The aim of the campaign is to encourage a shift in transportation habits, so that children participating are more inclined to choose active travel modes on their way to/from school, regardless of the weather or season.

The campaign targets preschoolers aged 4 to 7, along with their parents and teachers. It aims to encourage both children and their guardians to use eco-friendly modes of transport when commuting to preschools or schools. As part of the campaign, the youngest residents of Gdynia are encouraged to travel on foot, by bike, scooter, public transport, or by combining a car journey with a short walk for the final leg of the trip. Children will receive colourful posters shaped like trees, with stickers to collect. For each day a child arrives at preschool or school using public transport, walking, or riding a bike, scooter, or skateboard, they will receive a sticker from their teacher to place on the poster. Additionally, children will be given educational materials to work on with their teachers, helping them learn about sustainable mobility.

"The campaign began in October. To reward the children’s efforts, the “Gdynia Główna Theatre” will present a St. Nicholas Day performance. Children will also receive prizes related to road safety and the autumn-winter edition of the campaign. We want to appreciate the children’s commitment, as autumn and winter present more challenging weather conditions compared to spring and summer," said Deputy Mayor of Gdynia, Bartłomiej Austen.

This season, children will need to demonstrate even more determination than in the spring-summer edition. Between 10 and 20 October 2024, employees from the Sustainable Mobility Unit will conduct workshops on sustainable mobility in kindergartens and schools. These workshops will focus on active mobility and sustainable development, with an emphasis on health, daily commuting, urban space, and quality of life in Gdynia. Educating children on responsible road behaviour is also a key component of the initiative.

The top kindergartens and schools from the spring edition were selected for the autumn-winter edition. Both the children and teachers showed remarkable dedication to the campaign, and we hope they will become ambassadors for the autumn-winter edition!
