UBC Sustainable and Planning Cities Commission meeting in Gdansk

Following the success of the UBC Planning and Sustainable Cities Commission meeting in Turku, we are pleased to announce that the next joint Commissions meeting will be organized on 9-12 September 2024 in Gdansk, Poland!

Sustainable transformation for resilient coastal city

Gdańsk is the Polish maritime capital with the population reaching half a million. It is a large center of economic life, science, culture and a popular tourist destination.

According to the concept of a compact city, developing cities are looking for opportunities to fill in urban structures as close as possible to their centres. Gdańsk development strategy encourages seeking new solutions and implementing adaptive measures to make public spaces more green, inclusive and accessible. At the meeting, we will look for opportunities to revitalize urban structure by finding the best ideas for sustainable and smart transformation of port and industrial areas.

Workshop areas

During the Commissions meeting, we will work on three areas designing their future smart and sustainable plans.

WORKSHOP AREA 1 comprises about 38 ha of the Duty Free Zone, located in exposed and representative part of harbor entrance. The main activity at this moment is reloading of general cargo, including fruit, commercial vehicles, frozen fish and seafood.

WORKSHOP AREA 2 covers 19 ha at the southern embankment of the Martwa Wisła River, opposite the Westerplatte peninsula with a monument – symbol of starting of the II World War. This area is bordered by historical Nowy Port. Currently, it is a part of the Port Gdańsk. Both presented areas are generating heavy truck traffic through the revitalized and developing residential areas of Letnica and Nowy Port.

WORKSHOP AREA 3 covers 17 ha and is located in the vicinity of the football arena and the exhibition and congress centre. This location has convenient access to public transport: rail, tram and bus. In addition, it is located at an important road connection leading through the tunnel under the Martwa Wisła River.
