The SUMPs for BSR project has opened a second call for the SUMP Clinic – a free, tailored support for your city — and continues its free—of—charge five-module SUMP Training Programme. With a few Clinic slots still available, now is the perfect moment for cities to join and accelerate their transition toward more sustainable transport systems.

On 14 January 2026, the Training Programme, organised by SUMPs for BSR project, officially launched with the first webinar of a five-module webinar-and-workshop series dedicated to Sustainable Urban Mobility Planning (SUMP). The programme is organised by the SUMPs for BSR project, co-funded by the Interreg Baltic Sea Region Programme.

The webinar brought together experts and local authorities from across the Baltic Sea Region to explore integrated strategies for climate adaptation and disaster risk reduction. It was opened by Agnieszka Ilola, Head of Secretariat at the UBC Sustainable Cities, and Kaspars Vārpiņš, Chairman of the UBC Safe Cities, outlining the priorities for local authorities to increase climate resilience.

The event opened with remarks from Anders Ekman, a local politician actively engaged in mobility issues in Gävle. He shared experiences of the city working towards reaching the ambitious climate goals, emphasising the importance of influencing the travel choices made by citizens. Like in many other cities, in Gävle, transport emissions and car dependency remain the key barriers to reaching climate goals. 

The International Photo Competition on Active Mobility brought attention to the importance of sustainable mobility modes across six project partner cities.

Our Sustainable Cities Commission co-created the spring 2024 edition of the Baltic Cities Bulletin under the topic "Towards green and just transition"!

The proposal involves conducting a pilot project wherein partner cities would each test different remediation techniques, resulting in multiple techniques being evaluated together.

The project consortium has convened in the City of Turku – the host city of the UBC Sustainable Cities Commission and the lead partner of the project. The kick-off meeting, held on 9-10 January, has brought together the experts and practitioners in urban mobility planning from the consortium, fostering discussions on shared challenges and collective solutions.

Two new projects have begun in our Secretariat, where we look into achieving climate-neutrality: green mobility and climate budgeting process in the municipalities.

The XVII UBC General Conference took place on 24-26 October 2023 in the beautiful coastal city of Palanga in Lithuania. Our Commission organised a workshop on the EU Cities Mission, in addition to the networking event within the programme.
