The University and Hanseatic City of Greifswald has been nominated by the Agency for Renewable Energies (Agentur für Erneuerbare Energien, AEE) as Energy Municipality of the Year 2025. This makes Greifswald one of 12 selected municipalities nationwide, in addition to larger cities of Nuremberg and Stuttgart and smaller cities such as Hoyerswerda or Havelberg.

The voting for the city is open until 31 January: Energie-Kommune des Jahres - Agentur für Erneuerbare Energien

Greifswald was already awarded Energy Municipality of the Month in June 2025. The decisive factors for this were the long-standing commitment to climate protection, the process to reduce emissions and energy consumption launched already in 2008, successes in sustainable mobility, the commitment to peatland protection and the consistent alignment with global sustainability goals.

Germany's largest solar thermal plant of the Greifswalder Stadtwerke also attracted nationwide attention – a central component of the heating strategy on the way to climate neutrality, which is currently being further specified as part of municipal heat planning.

"Together with Greifswald's municipal utilities, major housing companies and other partners in the Sustainability Alliance, we are resolutely driving forward the heating transition in Greifswald,"
Dr. Stefan Fassbinder, Lord Mayor of the University and Hanseatic City of Greifswald
