Creating the infrastructure and raising awareness among citizens for choosing sustainable mobility modes – this is the aim for eight cities in the “cities.multimodal” project.
Multimodality is a twofold topic: to change the mobility behavior of people, the creation of physical mobility points, where it is easy and smooth to switch form one mode of transport to another has to go hand in hand with measures to change the attitude and view on mobility in general of the citizens.
During the 3 years of the cities.multmodal project, the partner cities are planning an integrated approach on enhancing the multimodal mobility options in their cities by establishing mobility points:
In Århus, Rostock, Kalmar, Guldborgsund, Gdynia and Vilnius citizens will be able to easier switch from car to bike, train to (electric)bikes, bus to shared car or just safely and easier walk and cycle to the train station.
The mobility points are planned with a special focus on involving citizens and their ideas into the process, to ensure a broad acceptance of the measure. The partner cities will test different innovative involvement methods during the implementation phase. Furthermore, project partners will expand their horizon and get inspiration from study visits to forerunner cities in Europe, develop their capacities in trainings and critically, but friendly review each other in peer review visits, to help each other proceeding.
All experiences and outcomes will be shared with you, the fellow Baltic Sea region cities, and hopefully the cooperation and networking continues also outside of the project.

Meet the Communication manager for cities.multimodal at the UBC Sustainable Cities Commission:
Esther has experience in planning and implementing EU projects focusing on Integrated Sustainability Management, climate change, sustainable mobility and communication & stakeholder involvement. She has been UBC´s coordinator for the Covenant of Mayors initiative. Her educational background includes a Master's in Environmental Sciences with a major in environmental law and policies & sustainability communications.
