City of Jyväskylä in Finland bringing wise use of resources closer to its citizens’ daily life

The constant depletion of natural resources, population growth and climate change will force societies around the world to embrace change. Sustainable lifestyles, energy efficiency and the re-cycling of materials from different products back into raw materials will reduce both costs and the burden on the environment. Local food, solar panels, smart transport, new services and future directions for cities - resource wisdom encompasses all of these.

City of Jyväskylä actively promotes sustainable and wise use of resources through experiments. The results of experiments showcased ways of sustainable lifestyles, energy efficiency and re-cycling of materials.

Over the period 2013-2015 the City of Jyväskylä and the Finnish Innovation Fund, Sitra implemented a project entitled Towards Resource Wisdom, the aim of which was to promote wiser use of resources and to reduce impacts on the environment in cooperation with residents, enterprises and different organizations. Even though the project itself has already ended almost two years ago, the work for resource wisdom still goes on actively in Jyväskylä region.

Resource Wisdom is a scalable operating model for regions to create regional vitality, business competitiveness, employment and sustainable wellbeing from circular and carbon-neutral economy. The main goal of resource wise actions is a waste-free, emissions-free, rationally consuming city of sustainable well-being.

By the year 2050 the city of Jyväskylä is working to become a waste-free, emission-free city that has renounced over-consumption – one that is inhabited by contented people.
